Cabinet of ministers
--

On Thursday, 12 May, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis will hold a meeting with His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, State Secretary of the Holy See in Rīga.

During the meeting, it is planned to discuss relations between the two parties as well as current events in Europe. M. Kučinskis and Pietro Parolin will lay flowers at the Freedom Monument.

The Prime Minister emphasized that Latvia and the Holy See enjoy a very good relationship. The Holy See has always supported Latvia's aspirations for independence and has never recognized Latvia's incorporation into the USSR.

The visit of the Cardinal has a high degree of relevance this year, as 2016 marks the 25th anniversary of the restoration of diplomatic relations after Latvia gained its independence and the 95th anniversary of recognition of Latvia de iure by the Holy See.

M. Kučinskis pointed out that there is successful collaboration between the State and the Church in Latvia that contributes to social justice – the Church engages in strengthening social values and provides specific assistance for rebuilding the social environment.

"The schools established by the Catholic Church in Latvia receive funding in accordance with laws and regulations and under the Agreement between Latvia and the Holy See," stressed M. Kučinskis.

It is expected that during the meeting the officials will discuss the opportunity to organize a visit of Pope Francis to Latvia in 2018, when Latvia and other Baltic States will celebrate the centenary of their foundation.

Following the meeting with Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, His Eminence Cardinal Pietro Parolin, State Secretary of the Holy See will deliver a lecture at the University of Latvia (Great Hall) at 15:00. The lecture will be live streamed.
