On Thursday 28 September, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participated in the informal dinner for the Heads of State and Government of the European Union (EU) hosted by the Estonian Prime Minister Jüri Ratas and Donald Tusk, President of the European Council.
Within the framework of this event, the EU Heads of State and Government discussed the situation in Europe and the future of the EU.
M. Kučinskis, when addressing the participants, emphasized that Latvia is ready to support everything that is aimed at strengthening the EU, and the discussion on the future of the EU must definitely take place in the 27-nation format. He also pointed out that the issue of geopolitical security is essential for Latvia.
“In the light of the geopolitical security aspect, although Latvia is in a geographical periphery, we wish to be at the centre of the debate about the future of Europe,” said M. Kučinskis.
The Prime Minister also pointed out that Latvia perceives the EU as a union of values.
“Nothing can last forever if it is not rooted in values. The recent history of Latvia makes us pay special attention to the issues of value," said M. Kučinskis.
When organizing informal dinner, D. Tusk in his letter of invitation to M. Kučinskis stated that this meeting is a good opportunity to discuss the approach to organizing debates on the EU, with particular regard to the many interesting views expressed regarding the substance, method and goals.
The event was held within the framework of the Tallinn Digital Summit.
