Prime Minister
--

On Sunday 11 September, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participated in a working dinner hosted by German Chancellor Angela Merkel in honour of the heads of government of five EU Member States - Latvia, Lithuania, Portugal, Malta and Cyprus.

During the meeting, the officials discussed issues related to the upcoming informal meeting of the EU heads of state in Bratislava, as well as the future development of the EU in view of the UK referendum results. M. Kučinskis stressed that economic development and compliance with free market principles are the most important issues facing Europe today.

All participants in the discussion agreed on the need to primarily address the issues that are important to EU citizens and which unite the people, including both economic development and the safeguarding of external and internal security with a focus on the strengthening of external borders. The leaders acknowledged that this is the right moment to focus on the issues that unite rather than divide EU citizens.

The European Council meeting will be held on September 16 in Bratislava.
