Evika Siliņa un Sauļus Skvernelis

On Tuesday 3 December, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa held a meeting with Saulius Skvernelis, the newly elected Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, who is also the former Prime Minister of Lithuania and one of the leaders of Lithuania's new ruling coalition party .

"Our meeting is another acknowledgement of the friendly neighbourly relations and close cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania. We remain committed to working together to promote the safety and welfare of the citizens of Latvia and the Baltic States," emphasized the Prime Minister during the conversation.

E. Siliņa underlines, "The focus of the meeting was also on large infrastructure projects, especially in the fields of energy and transport. We share the view that the synchronization of electricity grids with Europe is proceeding according to the plan. Together, we will also advance the implementation of the Rail Baltica project."

The Prime Minister presented Latvia's priorities for the Baltic Council of Ministers in 2025. E. Siliņa pointed to the need to promote the competitiveness of border regions and the well-being and security of their inhabitants. The officials also addressed transatlantic relations, support for Ukraine, preparations for the European Council in December this year and the hybrid threat in the Baltic Sea region.

The Speaker of the Lithuanian Seimas, S. Skvernelis is paying his first foreign visit to Latvia. S. Skvernelis holds the post of Speaker of the Seimas as from 14 November this year, and has been the Chairman of the Union of Democrats "For Lithuania" since 2022. S. Skvernelis was the Prime Minister of Lithuania from 2016 to 2020.
