On Saturday 25 March, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis attended the event marking the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome in Rome.
The Treaties of Rome, which laid the foundations for the current EU, were signed 60 years ago. To mark the anniversary of the Treaties of Rome, the EU Member States and institutions look back at the progress made and set future objectives.
To celebrate this event, the EU Heads of State or Government, including M. Kučinskis, signed the Rome Declaration. "Regaining of independence and return to the European family brought Latvia’s dream of freedom into reality. The European Union means to us freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights. It has provided us with the prosperity and security," said M. Kučinskis.
The membership of Latvia in the EU has provided clear support for the students, science and culture, a common foreign policy, which makes Latvia’s voice stronger on the international scene. It has also ensured the monetary, financial and economic stability, cleaner environment, protection our nature, food safety and quality, more accessible and more secure energy. The opportunity to move freely and free trade opportunity should also be emphasized.
The Prime Minister stresses that the EU must not rest on its laurels, and the European countries should be forward looking to ensure that we all are ready for new challenges. "We need to listen to citizens' opinions. The EU should develop in such directions as security, economic and social progress. Recent events have shown the EU needs. It is very likely that the decision of the British people to withdraw from the EU or Brexit has "shaken up" Europe, forcing it to think more about the future and not be complacent or even sleepy, as it has been over recent years," said M. Kučinskis.
As announced, Prime Minister M. Kučinskis is paying a visit to Rome – the capital of Italy, to attend the events held in honour of the 60th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome on Friday 24 March and Saturday 25 March.
