Today, during the extraordinary European Council meeting that brought together the EU Heads of State and Government, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš stressed that Latvia stands for targeted sanctions against those Belarusian officials who are responsible for organising elections and violent suppression of peaceful demonstrations.
Similarly, Latvia is opposed to violence in the suppression of peaceful demonstrations and calls for immediate release of all detainees.
At the meeting of the EU leaders, K.Kariņš stated that the only solution to the current situation is to hold new, free and fair presidential elections in Belarus, because the elections of 9 August were neither free nor fair. It is necessary to ensure the presence of international observers in the organisation of new elections.
