On Thursday 2 February, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis held a meeting with Marek Kuchciński, Speaker of the Polish Sejm in Rīga.

During the meeting, the two officials addressed security policy issues, current EU developments, as well as shared interests in the development of regional transport and energy projects.

As regards the energy issues, M.Kučinskis stressed the importance of continuing to develop the regional gas and electricity market, strengthen the security of energy supply and build interconnections such as GIPL and Baltic Connector. The Prime Minister and Speaker of the Polish Sejm also discussed further work on the Rail Baltica project. Māris Kučinskis noted with satisfaction the newly signed agreement of the three Baltic States, by emphasizing that this, once again, demonstrates our commitment to implement the project without delay.

The Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for Poland's contribution to strengthening security in the Baltic States. Poland is among the closest NATO partners of Latvia - it regularly participates in the Air Policing mission in the Baltic States. Poland will send its troops to Latvia as a part of Canada-led NATO battalion, and together with other Visegrad countries will send its soldiers to training.
