On Saturday 4 November, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis met with Chennamaneni Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of the state of Maharashtra in India. The meeting mainly focused on cooperation in the fields of education, science and culture.
M. Kučinskis pointed out that Latvia is interested in strengthening the cooperation with the higher education institutions of India, including the Mumbai University, by offering joint study programs, developing joint projects, promoting student and employee mobility.
The number of Indian students in the higher education institutions of Latvia is increasing every year (this year about 1000 Indian students study in Latvia). It was highlighted that Latvia offers world-class tertiary education in medicine and information technologies (IT). The Indian students also choose the study fields like computer systems, mechanics, mechanical engineering, and aviation transport.
Within the framework of bilateral cooperation in the field of culture, the Centre for Baltic Culture and Studies is operating in Haridwar (India) and the Centre of Indian Studies and Culture at the University of Latvia. Latvia is interested in opening the Centre for Baltic Studies and Culture at the Mumbai University. We see the opportunity for students and teachers of higher education institutions of Latvia to work with the Mumbai University under the ERASMUS + projects.
This year marks the 25th anniversary since the renewal of diplomatic relations between Latvia and India.
M.Kučinskis is paying a working visit to India from 2 - 6 November. Within the framework of the visit, he will meet with the President of India Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister of India Narendra Damodardas Modi, the ministers of India, as well as participate in the business forums.
