State Chancellery
--

On Friday, March 18, during a meeting of the European Council, heads of the Visegrad States, Baltic States, Romania and Croatia submitted a joint letter to the Heads of the EU States and Governments and Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission, concerning the project Nord Stream 2.

In their letter, the officials emphasised the importance of energy security and the diversification of energy supply routes, and they expressed their hope that the European Energy Union would strengthen energy security in the region. Meanwhile, they also expressed their concerns that Nord Stream 2, which is being developed, could cause unfavourable consequences for the gas market development and impede diversification of gas supplies in Central and Eastern European countries.

The heads of the above countries urged the European Commission to examine the project Nord Steam 2 by paying special attention to its compliance with EU law and the EU energy policy.

Māris Kučniskis signed the letter on behalf on the Republic of Latvia.
