On Saturday, November 5, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis met with Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydło. During the meeting, they discussed issues affecting relations between the two countries, security issues, and the situation in Europe.
For Latvia, Poland is a significant partner and ally in the region, and Latvia has good and long-standing bilateral relations with this country, successful cooperation in NATO, in the European Union, in the Council of the Baltic Sea States and in other international organizations. Poland is the fifth largest foreign trade partner of Latvia.
Mr. Kučinskis stated that the expansion of bilateral economic cooperation will continue to be one of the most important priorities in the dialogue between Latvia and Poland. Latvia sees the potential for cooperation with Poland in regional energy infrastructure projects. "We are interested in quick implementation of the Gas Interconnection Poland–Lithuania (GIPL) project, which will contribute to the development of the regional natural gas market and liquidity," said Mr. Kučinskis.
During the meeting, recent progress related to the project "Rail Baltica" project was also mentioned as a positive factor.
Speaking about the situation in Europe, Mr. Kučinskis stressed that the focus should be on measures and ideas that would restore public support and confidence in the European Union and promote the EU's security, socio-economic development and global competitiveness.
The Polish Prime Minister B. Szydło is visiting Latvia within the framework of the 16 + 1 Summit in Riga.
