On Wednesday, March 16, in Brussels, Māris Kučinskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, is meeting representatives of the Latvian diaspora residing in Belgium. About 2500 citizens of Latvia live in Belgium, most of them are diplomats, staff members of EU bodies (and members of their families), as well as employees of multinational companies and university students.
The Latvian Government highly values contribution of the diaspora during Latvia’s first Presidency in the Council of the European Union both as regards the essential content of the Presidency and organisational and publicity support for the cultural programme of the Presidency.
The Prime Minister underlines that those Latvians who live in Belgium are a part of the enterprising and educated Latvian society contributing to the protection of Latvia’s interests and promoting its presence in Belgium.
“I would like to express my appreciation to all the families which develop and maintain the Latvian identity of their children in various way – by attending local Latvian schools and participating in the events organised by the diaspora. We would be delighted to see young people returning to Latvia and using, as high-level professionals and specialists, their education obtained in the international environment,” said the Prime Minister.
As reported, this week the Latvian Prime Minister is visiting Brussels in order to participate in the meeting of the European Council and to meet Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO.
