From June 28-29, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participates in work of the European Council where the EU heads of state or government plan to address the outcome of the UK referendum, migration and external relations.
It is expected that the European Council will formulate a common attitude towards the outcome of the UK referendum. In the referendum held on 23 June, 51.9% of British residents have voted to leave the European Union.
Latvia has already expressed its regret over Brexit referendum results, while noting that it will do its utmost to protect the interests of its nationals and businesses in the negotiations on the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the EU. It is also intended to discuss the development of the European Union after Brexit.
The EU leaders will also raise the issues related to migration, by finding what changes have there been since the EU-Turkey agreement on the readmission of asylum seekers who have arrived to the EU. After the decision, the migration from Turkey to the Greek islands has fallen sharply, and currently has virtually stopped.
Latvia has already received 47 persons within the EU Resettlement Programme.
The European Council will discuss the situation relating to economic growth in the EU – it is intended to invite to take measures in order to achieve a rapid and convincing economic growth. Each year the Council reports to the European Council meeting of June on the progress made with regard to the deepening of the single market in all its aspects.
