On Thursday, March 17, in Brussels, Māris Kučinskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, will meet with Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO. During the meeting it is planned to discuss the security situation in the region and preparation for the 2016 Warsaw Summit in July.

Māris Kučinskis noted that it is essential for Latvia that the Warsaw Summit adopts decisions on the long-term presence of NATO forces in the Baltic region.

The Latvian Prime Minister also intends to inform the Secretary General of NATO about Latvia's commitment to increase its defence budget to 2% of GDP by 2018.

NATO’s agenda includes the strengthening of cooperation with Sweden and Finland as well as the provision of support to Ukraine and Georgia. Several experts from Latvia provide their expertise to Georgia on military procurement and maritime safety.

As reported, this week Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis will visit Brussels in order to participate in the meeting of the European Council and to meet Jens Stoltenberg, Secretary General of NATO.
