On Saturday 7 July, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis met with Prime Minister of Romania Viorica Dăncilă in Sofia.
During the meeting, the officials discussed cooperation between the two countries, with a special focus on economic issues.
M. Kučinskis pointed out that Latvia and Romania have the potential to develop economic cooperation, which has so far not been sufficient. Both sides agreed that it is necessary to organize a high-level economic forum for Latvian and Romanian entrepreneurs. In the first quarter of this year, the trade turnover of goods between Latvia and Romania has increased by almost a quarter while the trade volumes are still small. The Latvian companies see export potential to Romania - with equipment for grain processing, nutritional supplements, medicinal products and ICT services. Attention was paid to possible cooperation in the field of air carrier services. Mr Kučinskis emphasized that the Latvian airline Air Baltic is currently operating successfully in the Baltic region, and offers flights to around 100 destinations.
During the bilateral meeting, V.Dăncilă extended an invitation to the Prime Minister to visit Romania.
The parties met within the framework of the ‘16 + 1’ Summit of the Heads of Government of Central and Eastern European countries and China.
