On Thursday 15 December, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis met Theresa May, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom in Brussels.
During the meeting, the officials discussed the issues relating to security, economic cooperation, as well as UK’s withdrawal from the European Union or Brexit.
Both M. Kučinskis and T. May agreed on cooperation in the field of security. T. May stressed that the presence of the British military contingent in the Baltic States will be further provided. The officials underlined the need to avoid duplication of NATO functions while promoting cooperation in the field of security among the European Union countries.
The two sides agreed that Latvia and the United Kingdom need to work closely together in the field of strategic communication, meaning the cooperation at the level of the public administration, well as the exchange of information.
As regards Brexit, it was emphasized that this process should be undertaken in a peaceful, constructive atmosphere, by minimizing the negative impact on the economy. M. Kučinskis deplored the fact the UK’s citizens are willing to withdraw from the European Union.
In the course of future negotiations on UK’s withdrawal from the European Union, Latvia will monitor that the interests of Latvia’s citizens residing in this country are not affected.
