Prime Minister

On Thursday, March 3, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis will pay an introductory visit to Lithuania. Within its framework, meetings with the Prime Minister of Lithuania, Algirdas Butkevičius, and the President of Lithuania, Dalia Grybauskaitė, are planned. The Prime Minister will also visit the factory Sacret.

Latvia and Lithuania are close strategic partners engaged in intensive political dialogue and dynamic economic cooperation. Lithuania is Latvia’s largest trading partner with turnover of EUR 3.65 billion in 2015, as well as one of its major investors: EUR 461.5 million.

In 2015, exports of Latvian goods to Lithuania amounted to EUR 1.74 billion, representing a 5% increase from 2014.

The Prime Minister welcomes the fact that the Intergovernmental Commission for Cross-Border Cooperation (IGC) has resumed work after a four-year break, taking the view that the IGC meetings should be held on a regular basis. The Prime Minister believes that these meetings can deal effectively with a number of practical cooperation issues which are important for border regions.

"In light of international migration policy challenges, we want to raise the issue of developing a draft agreement on the maintenance of the Latvian-Lithuanian state borders," said M. Kučinskis.

The Prime Minister believes that the conclusion of such an agreement is essential for internal security of the two countries and proposes resumption of expert-level meetings.
