On Friday, February 26, Prime Minister of Latvia Māris Kučinskis, Prime Minister of Lithuania Algirdas Butkevičius and Prime Minister of Estonia Taavi Rõivas will meet for an informal working session of the Baltic Council of Ministers (BCM) in the Small Guild. The Heads of Government will discuss cooperation between the Baltic States to strengthen security, as well as cooperation in the fields of transport and energy.
During the meeting, the officials plan to discuss topical security issues in the region while preparing for the NATO Summit to be held in Warsaw in July. Prime Ministers will also discuss issues related to development of the "Rail Baltica" project, the natural gas market, including regional connections, the EU Energy Security Package and the project "Nord Stream 2", as well as the electricity market focusing on regional connections.
Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis emphasizes: "Energy security of the Baltic States needs to be strengthened by doing our own homework and playing an active role within the European Union."
M.Kučinskis also points out that in discussions on the Energy Security Package the Baltic States have to stand up together for greater transparency in contracts with third-country suppliers on construction of the strategic infrastructure.
