The European Council which is also attended by Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis today in Brussels re-elected Donald Tusk as its president for a term from 1 June 2017 to 30 November 2019.
D. Tusk’s candidature for this post was supported by an overwhelming majority of the European Union Member States, including Latvia.
M. Kučinskis points out that he supports D. Tusk for the post of the President of the European Council, taking into account that he understands the real situation in the region and supports Latvia’s position on a number of issues.
“Our previous meetings have shown that the President of the European Council and Latvia have similar vision for addressing various significant issues,” says M. Kučinskis.
As announced, Prime Minister M. Kučinskis is paying a visit to Brussels from 9-10 March to participate in work of the European Council.
